Audience Research Preperation

Questionnaires
In todays lesson we discussed questionnaires and what makes a good and bad questionnaire. From this I learnt the different factors that must be considered when making an effective questionnaire to then give to the target audience. As a group we begun to discuss what our approach to audience research will be and we believe that a questionnaire will be a good choice to extract information from our target audience. When designing the questionnaire, we want to find out what the target audience expects in a horror and what attracts them to watch horror films, this will be very useful because we can gather up as much information to ensure our trailer appeals to the audience.

What a Good Questionnaire includes:
  1. Include both Open and Closed Questions.
  2. Keep the questions simple and to the point.
  3. Make the questions easy to understand.
  4. Use a minimum amount of questions to find out the exact information.
  5. Don't include any leading questions.
Focus Group
  • A focus group is a group of between 6 to 10 people, who discuss ideas and opinions with the moderator. Also while the focus group is in progress, the participants should be able to feel free to express their own opinions.
  • A focus group is normally a small number of people so that the participants are all free to express themselves, and also so the we can cover as many aspects of the idea as possible.
  • A focus group should consist of a wide variety of people, this includes differences in age, gender, personality etc.
Another research method we have discussed is the focus group and we believe it would be a good idea to use this for audience research. We think this will be very useful because last year in AS media we conducted a focus group and we learnt a great deal of information to then apply to the project.

Aspects to Consider
  • Demographics
  • Psychographics
  • Actual Audience
  • Target Audience
  • Niche vs Mass Audience
  • Uses and Gratifications
Also in todays lesson we learnt different ways in which we could conduct our research, for example there is:-
  1. Quantitive: Statistics and Averages
  2. Qualititive: Opinions, Thoughts and Ideas
