Choosing a Brief

I have decided to chose the film brief which is to create a promotion package for a new film, to include a trailer, together with two of the following three options, a website homepage for the film, a film magazine front cover, featuring the film and a poster for the film. I have chosen this task because out of the tasks available I feel that my present skills would best suit this specific task as both the main and ancillary tasks are suited to my skills. For example for the main task I feel that my editing skills and filming skills developed in the AS media coursework are best matched to this specific brief. Also for the ancillary tasks, I believe that the skills I have learnt and developed in other subjects can be used to help me complete the task well.

However when we where choosing the task we wanted to complete, to had a large choice of options, but the teachers advised us which briefs were best for us to choose from, these included:
  •  A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo, alongside a digipak for the album's release and a magazine advertisement for the digipak.
  •   A promotion package for a new film, to include a trailer, together with a film magazine front cover, featuring the film and also a poster for the film.
  •   A promotion package for a new soap opera, to include a TV trailer, together with a listing magazine front cover and a poster for the soap.
  •   A selection of materials related to a children;s TV drama, to include a title sequence of the TV programme, together with a DVD cover for the series and a front cover to a magazine for the series.
For the ancillary task, my group have chosen to do the film magazine front cover, featuring the film and the poster for the film. I feel this is a good choise because I also take graphic communication and ICT which will help me complete my tasks well. From taking these subjects I have knowledge in certain software, for example Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Also I am quite creativity when designing and my skills with the software will help complement my designing skills. When choosing the brief, we based the decision off both the main task and the ancillary task as these are both as important overall.

For the main project we have chosen the horror genre, I think this will be good for the trailer because myself and the rest of the group enjoy watching horror films both at home and at the theatres. Also I feel that I am familiar with the conventions for this genre which makes my knowledge of this specific film genre stronger which will help me in research and planning.

In lesson time we decided to analyse each task to pin point our strongest brief as a group. We completed SWOT analysis for each brief and set it out as a mind map. As a group, we identified the strengths, the weaknesses, the opportunities and the threats for each and this helped us finally decide we brief to chose. This was very helpful, as it allowed us to see which brief was realistically possible for us to achieve as a group.
