Sound

For researching sound, I have come across a website called www.freeplaymusic.com, while browsing this site I found some great sounds which could be used to follow the conventions of pyschological horror and create suspense and build up tension for the audience. In researching sound I focused on stereotypical horror music, conventions of sounds in horror films and film trailers and also potential sounds and soundtracks which could be used in our film trailer.

In pyschological horror films many sound effects are used, also in film trailers it is very common for effects to be used as the sounds are normally eerie and sinister. A type of effect which is sometimes used is unnatural sounds which makes the audience feel uncomfortable as the non-diegetic sound is unfamiliar with them therefore the audience find this scary and this makes their experience more intense. Typical sounds in horrors often include bats, laughing, door creaking, crows and owl noises. All these are very common within horror and are very stereotypical for horror films therefore the audience may have grown familiar and therefore the impact on the audience isn't as dramatic as it used to be, therefore spooky sounds like doors creaking which do have scary connotates make them iconic bit far more predictable.

Many pyschological horrors have sudden changes in pitch of non-diegetic sound, this helps build up tension for the audience and gets the audiences attention. An example of sudden change in sound is in the trailer You're Next. Myself, Amber and Kayleigh really like this trailer as there are many different aspects of sound we like, from the unnatural non-diegetic sound to the sudden bursts of fast paced music. Below is a part of the trailer which has really good use of sound and which I really like and is what I would like to do for our film trailer.
